Our Story

Every piece begins with a rope that’s already lived a life at sea.

Scrimshaw Chandlery was born from a simple observation: the finest marine rigging rope in the world — engineered to hold fast against North Atlantic gales — was being discarded after a single season on the water. Perfectly sound line, cut from the rigging lofts of RiggingOnly, destined for a dumpster.

We saw something different in those coils. We saw belts that would outlast anything on a department store rack. Dog collars that could survive a Labrador’s worst day at the beach. Keychains with more character than anything stamped out of a factory.

The craft is real. Each piece is handworked from genuine marine-grade rope — the same line trusted by bluewater sailors, commercial fishermen, and yacht riggers along the New England coast. We finish every item with solid brass and gold-tone hardware, chosen for its resistance to salt air and its warmth against the rope’s natural texture.

The heritage runs deep. Our name honors the scrimshaw tradition — the art of turning raw maritime materials into objects of beauty, practiced by New England whalers for over two centuries. Like those craftsmen, we take what the sea provides and shape it into something worth keeping.

Nothing is wasted. Every belt, bracelet, and collar we make is one less length of premium rope sent to a landfill. This isn’t greenwashing — it’s the founding principle of our workshop. The rope comes to us as surplus. It leaves as something you’ll carry for years.

We’re based on the New England coast, where the smell of salt water and the creak of dock lines are part of the daily rhythm. That’s not marketing copy — it’s where the rope comes from, and it’s where we work.

Scrimshaw Chandlery. Rigged for life.
